Verna I. Jorde

Verna Jorde, age 91, resident of Lakota, ND passed away peacefully under the care of Good Samaritan Society and Hospice of the Red River Valley at Good Samaritan Society Lakota on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.

Verna was born October 4, 1931 near Trail, MN, the daughter of Inga Hillestad.  She was raised on a farm and attended a country school until age 13 when she moved to East Grand Forks, MN.  Verna graduated from Central High School in East Grand Forks, MN in 1949.  After graduating she worked at a bank in East Grand Forks and at Black’s Sweet Shop in Grand Forks, ND.  Verna fell in love and married Elwood Jorde on June 21, 1953 in East Grand Forks, MN.  Together they began their married life on a farmstead near Michigan, ND.  They were members of Center Lutheran Church and later members of Michigan Lutheran Church.  Verna loved being in the kitchen, always cooking and baking.  She made fresh baked bread weekly.  Her specialty was making lefse.  Neighbors and friends would stop in for a visit and receive coffee along with fresh baked treats.  Verna also loved bowling and was on a league for several years.  Her team competed in many state tournaments.  Verna loved watching the Minnesota Twins on her TV or listening to the games on her radio.  When she was not watching Twins baseball you would catch her watching polka dancing on television.  Verna had a strong Christian faith and loved serving in the church.  She worked hard alongside her neighbors and friends in the church setting.  She blessed many lives with her love and support.

Verna will be deeply missed by her children, Elaine (Dale) Jones of Apple Valley, MN and Rodney Jorde (Kelly) of Michigan, ND; grandchildren, Tera Krebs, Joshua (Andrea) Krebs, and Kayla (Curtiss) Campbell; great grandchildren, Ethan, Ayden, Domanic, Lilly, Sullivan, and Theodore.

Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Elwood Jorde; son, Neal Jorde; grandson, Dustin Jorde; mother, Inga Hillestad; and sister, Shirley West.

The Funeral Service will be held at Michigan Lutheran Church, Michigan, ND, on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will be in the spring at the Center Lutheran Cemetery, rural McVille, ND.  Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
