Theresa (Stroh) Hamel

On March 25, 2024, Theresa Hamel passed away peacefully at Bethany Retirement Home in Fargo, North Dakota, with her spouse of 74 years, Louis J. Hamel, by her side holding her hand. Theresa was born February 5, 1929, in a rural house in Pierce County to Theresa (Digenstein) and John Stroh.  She attended elementary school, later moved to the Minot area where she met Louis, and they were wed on November 16, 1949.  They moved to Lakota, North Dakota where they farmed for more than 50 years and raised 4 children. 

Theresa enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, crocheting, sewing, and dancing. She was also known for showcasing her cooking and baking her famous caramel rolls. She was an active member of the St. Mary’s Altar Society. She was also very active in coordinating Reuben Township gatherings. Many found her to be funny, crafty, generous and caring. Being a mom, grandmother and great-grandmother was her pride and joy.   

Theresa was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters, and her son Richard.  She is survived by her sister, Gladys (Jerry) Schnase, her husband, Louis, her children:  Connie (Dennis) Reiss, Traci (Bruce) Maragos, Jim (Suzanne) Hamel, her grandchildren:  Ella (Bobby) Payne, Jacob Reiss, Teri (Billy) Thompson, Andi (AJ) Wohlers, Eric (Ali) Maragos, Ricky (Katie) Hamel, Adam Maragos, Ben Hamel, Phillip (Kloee) Hamel, and Jacob Hamel.  She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, William, Vivian, Emery, Salem, Blair, Kelsey, Connor, Simon, Wynn, Kip, Lennyx, Rikki, Finnegan, and Callahan.   

The funeral service for Theresa Hamel will be Monday, April 1, 2024, at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lakota, North Dakota. Burial will be held at the Lakota Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in Theresa’s name.
