Russell E. Schmidt, age 87, died Tuesday May 5, 2020 at Lakota Good Samaritan Center.

Russell was born May 13, 1932 at the family farm in Petersburg Township to Gertrude and Erwin H. Schmidt.  He attended school in the Township country school and graduated from Petersburg High School.  He joined the Air Force, serving nationally and internationally from 1952-1956.  Russell married Diane V. Kroke August 3, 1957 in Dahlen, ND.  The marriage was blessed with 7 children.

Russell was a hard worker, farming for 62 years from 1957-2019.  He worked many years at the Grand Forks Air Force Base, retiring in 1994.  After retiring, he proudly worked at the Ralph Engelstad Arena supporting the Fighting Sioux.

Russell was very proud of his large family.  He enjoyed attending every family gathering and went on several recent family trips, including seeing the Grand Canyon and Glacier National Park.

Russell is survived by his children, Marilyn (Roger) Behm, Joyce (Mark) Magnus, Evy (Eric) Olson, Donald (Michelle) Schmidt, Russ Schmidt, and Brian (Mary) Schmidt; 13 grandchildren/15 great-grandchildren: Chris (Kellie) Behm, Shelby (Tom) Zach and Nicholas; Holly (Casey) Bergh, Kaden, Taylor and Megan; Lindsay (Josh) Austfjord, Emma, Lilly, Lucy and Beau; Matt (Laura) Magnus, Paige and Blake; Tracy Magnus; Alycia, Katie and Morgan Olson; Kayla Schmidt, Trinity and Jaxon; Brandon Schmidt, Peyton and Maverick; Breanne, Jase and Blake Schmidt; and one great-great-grandchild, Allie Zach; brothers, Lloyd (Dorcas) Schmidt and Ervy (Judy) Schmidt; and sister, Janice Schmidt; sister-in law, Gilma Schmidt; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins along with lifelong friend, Norman Severson.

Russell was preceded in death by Diane Schmidt; son, Robert Carl; his parents; brothers and sisters-in- law: Kenneth Schmidt, Curtis and Charlotte Schmidt, Dinnie Schmidt; Mickey and Frieda Schmidt; sisters and brothers-in-law: Lois and Curtis Ellenson; Eileen and Deloy Kiefat; Donna Mae Schmidt.

Funeral services will be private with military honors and interment at Michigan Cemetery.  Due to Covid-19, a celebration of life will be held at a future date.
