Peter Overby

January 18, 1954 ~ August 2, 2020 (age 66)

Peter Overby, 66, of Cooperstown, ND, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2020 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Pete was born on January 18, 1954 to Alph and Meriel Overby. While it may be hard to believe, Pete spoke little as a toddler, but when he did, he made it count – one of his first words was “carburetor”! His love of anything with wheels began at a young age and continued throughout his life, influencing many jobs in his diverse career path.

Pete graduated from UND with an Aviation Administration and Business degree. He was a flight instructor, weather modification pilot, landman in the oil fields of Oklahoma and Kansas, over-the-road truck driver, farmer, and owner of M.B. Cassell Abstract Company in Steele County. He worked several of these jobs simultaneously. In retirement, he worked for Carlson Farms and Finley Motors. In addition to his full-time roles, Pete spent evenings and weekends in the shop using his mechanical skills. He lived on the family farm in Steele County for most of his life, and was a farmer at heart.

Pete’s life revolved around wheels – being behind the wheel, working on cars, cruising to Sturgis, and scoping out classic cars. He had a soft spot for kids and taught countless relatives and friends how to ride a bike, and a few years later, how to drive a car, dirt bike, tractor, motorcycle, and more. Pete enjoyed any occasion that let the wheels roll.

Pete will be remembered for his generosity, quick wit, and solid advice. He valued spending time with extended family. Pete was a great guy and friend to all.

Pete is survived by his siblings Signe (David) Nelson, Eric (Peggy) Overby, and Sonja (Lynn) Johnson; special cousin David (Margaret) Simonson and family; former spouse and good friend Angie Overby and family; nephews Andrew (Amy) Nelson and family and Matthew (Samantha) Nelson and family; nieces Brita Johnson and Karis (Luke) Maxwell; and a vast network of friends.

At Pete’s request, no service will be held. A private family gathering will take place at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Finley Cemetery, Griggs County Library, or the fire department or ambulance squad in Griggs or Steele County. Condolences may be mailed to: 11210 11th Street SE, Hannaford, ND 58448.
