Milton O. Barney

Milton Oliver Barney, age 94, resident of Michigan, ND, passed peacefully on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at the Good Samaritan Society in Lakota, ND with family at his side.

Milton was born on the family farm south of Petersburg, ND on May 1, 1929 to Nettie (Johnson) Barney and George Charles Barney.  He attended country school in Melvin Township through the 8th grade and graduated from high school in Petersburg.  Milton attended one year of school in Fargo, ND at NDSU where he developed his love for Bison football.  Milton married Charlotte Bonde on January 28, 1951 at the Lutheran Church in Michigan, ND.  Together they had five children, Lance, Michael, David, Paul, and Kathleen, 13 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren.  Milton and Charlotte farmed and raised Black Angus cattle throughout the years, in his free time Milton loved to hunt, fish, and golf.  Milton was especially proud of getting his private pilot’s license.  Milton served on the church council and township boards and census.  He kept up on the news, sports, and weather.  Milton had a love for family history and ancestry which he often shared with family and friends.  Milton and Charlotte enjoyed traveling to visit friends and family throughout the country.  Milton was the family’s personal weatherman and was always known to send you off with the statement “drive careful”.

Milton is survived by his wife, Charlotte; his children, Lance (Georgette) Barney, Paul Barney, and Kathleen Barney; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Barney; sister, Beverly Swanson; his grandchildren and great grandchildren; and many close family friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Nettie and George Barney; an unnamed infant sibling; his sister, Charlotte (George) Skaggs; his brother, LeVerne Barney; and his two sons, Michael Barney (2013) and David Barney (2002).

Milton and his family would like to thank all of the caregivers at Good Samaritan and Hospice of the Red River Valley for their care provided to Milton.

The Funeral Service will be held at Michigan Lutheran Church, Michigan, ND, on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will be private in the Michigan Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home of Lakota, ND, on Tuesday, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and will continue at the church on Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Michigan Cemetery, the Michigan Fire Department, or the Michigan Ambulance Service.
