Mel H. McKinnon

Mel McKinnon, age 77, resident of McVille, ND, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2021 after a long struggle with his health.

Mel drove truck for 55 years throughout the United States and his home country of Canada.  He was proud to be a member of the Million Mile Club.  Mel has many friends on both sides of the border who will miss his tremendous sense of humor, his huge heart, and his booming laugh.

For over 20 years, Mel helped to raise litters of service dog puppies, most of which went on to help veterans improve their lives.  Mel was very involved in the dog world, raising, training, and showing Labrador Retrievers.  He adored every dog in his care and spoke of them often.

Mel is survived by his wife, Ellen of McVille, ND; four step-children that he loved very much, Rebecca, Jessica, Steven, and Bryce; three granddaughters, Annabell, Ashton, and Adaline; and his best friend, Larry Walter.

Mel’s wishes were that there be no visitation or funeral because he didn’t want “a bunch of sad people standing around lookin’ at my urn”.  Instead, there will be a Celebration of Life BBQ this summer for friends and family to share memories and stories.
