Joyce Severson

Joyce Severson, age 89, resident of Lakota, ND, formerly of Michigan, ND, died Thursday, November 10, 2022 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Joyce Hatten was born February 11, 1933 in Crary, ND, the daughter of Ralph and Ann (Cole) Hatten.  She attended elementary school in Southam and Central High School in Devils Lake, graduating with the class of 1950.  Joyce married Selmer Severson on December 13, 1952.  They began farming south of Mapes, ND in 1953, continuing until their retirement in 1992.  They moved into Michigan in 1999.  Joyce and Selmer were married for 57 years at the time of his death on January 28, 2010.  Joyce moved into the Prairie Rose Apartments at Lakota in February of 2021.  Over the years she had been active in the McVille Tri-Parish and Center Lutheran Church; and more recently the Michigan Lutheran Church.  Joyce loved her farm and her family, but was also a prime example of community service.  She was always there to help and comfort those in need.  She was happiest when all of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were at her side.  Her legacy will live on in those who knew and loved her.  She was very active at the food pantry in Michigan for many years.  Joyce kept busy with her many hobbies and enjoyed various social activities such as Bingo, Bunco, Birthday Club, the Holidays, cooking, canning, and gardening.

Joyce will be deeply missed by her 3 children, JoDee (Mike) Aafedt of Casselton, ND, Tracy (Brad) Bushee of East Grand Forks, MN, and Jason Severson of Michigan, ND; 4 grandchildren, Darcy (Scott Hanson) Aafedt of Chandler, AZ, Jeremy (Nikki) Bushee of Emerado, ND, Scott Aafedt of Fargo, ND, and April (Paul) Hansen of East Grand Forks, MN; 7 great grandchildren, Bryce Bushee, Braden Bushee, Alexa Hanson, Emery Hanson, Ava Hansen, Landon Hansen, and Emma Hansen; 2 sisters, Charlotte Burt of Devils Lake, ND and Marilyn Bachmeier of Forest Lake, MN; and several cousins, nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Selmer; 2 sisters, Peggy Eidsness and Monica Schill; and 2 brothers, Neil Hatten and Duane in infancy.

Joyce’s Funeral Service will be held at the Michigan Lutheran Church, Michigan, ND, on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will be at the Center Lutheran Cemetery, rural McVille, ND.  Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
