Henry Edward "Ed" Jutila Obituary

Henry Edward Jutila (Ed) passed peacefully on February 27, 2024 surrounded by his family.  Ed was born during a blizzard on the family farm on March 14, 1944, and left us in a blizzard in Lakota, ND.  Ed graduated from Napoleon high school in 1962, where he enjoyed participating in wrestling and football.  After graduating, he worked at the Kintyre Elevator and later went to work in Seattle, WA in the shipyards building doors for warships during the Vietnam Era.  He returned to the family farm to help his father.  He bought the family farm, also known as Hilltop Ranch, in 1972 and raised grain and cattle.  Ed married Sharon Oberlander on September 11, 1971, in Stanton, ND.  They had 2 children, Bethany & Nathan.  Ed served on several boards though the years, he was the Chairman of Tell Township for decades, the Finnish Cemetery President and was a member of the Kintyre Church Council.

Ed was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need.  A good round up and working cattle with the neighbors was something he looked forward to.  His interest in ranching led him to a 50 plus year career as a North Dakota State Brand Inspector.  He loved to hear the guy’s stories and truckers always looked for that piece of candy he had along.

Hunting was Ed’s greatest passion, he enjoyed many hunts with brothers, nephews, buddies and even a pastor or two.  His favorite hunting buddy was his son, Nathan.  Ed cherished the time he got to spend elk hunting in the mountains of Montana, Wyoming and Colorado always hauling horses to aide in the hunts.  He also looked forward to fall when it was time to head west to the Badlands and find that big mule deer.  He enjoyed bird hunting, local deer hunting and driving around the countryside scouting.  Ed loved to travel, he was always ready with a map in hand and ready for a road trip or just a “drive around the block”.

Family and friends were always very important to him, one thing he cherished was having loved ones from near and far come visit the farm.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, George and Esther (Freeman) Jutila; siblings, Donald, Elsie (Erickson), Raymond, and Vernon; father & mother-in-law, Herb and Esther Oberlander; nephews, Gary Jutila & Alan Aarstead; and a granddaughter, Hope Ann Jutila.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Kintyre & Lakota, ND; 2 children, Bethany (Jutila) & Jason Ufferman of Birchwood, WI, and Nathan & Angela (Spanier) Jutila of Lakota, ND; grandchildren, Amber Jutila of Venus, TX and Emma and Jack Jutila of Lakota, ND; sister, Helen (Jutila) Roth of Bismarck, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kintyre, ND on Saturday March 9, 2024 at 11:00 am CST with visitation prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00am.
