Gordon Leir Ashland passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2020, at the Griggs County Care Center at the age of 97. Gordon was born March 15, 1923 in rural Griggs County to Jens and Myrtle (Leir) Ashland.
Gordon grew up in rural Cooperstown. He was the eldest of four children. Gordon attended rural grade school through the eighth grade. He then continued farming with his dad.
Gordon met and married the love of his life Norma Jean Veile, June 29, 1943. Following their marriage, they started farming in Clearfield Township. Gordon continued farming until his retirement in 1990. They were blessed with three children Priscilla, Deborrah and Barton.
Gordon, for many years, farmed during the day and played in a local dance band at night. Gordon served on the Clearfield Township Board for 53 years and was a Charter member as well as a lifetime member of the local Sons of Norway.
Gordon loved being a farmer. He loved music and family get togethers. He enjoyed visiting with friends or perfect strangers.
Gordon is survived by his wife Norma of nearly 77 years and his children Priscilla (James) Paul of Mandan ND, Deborrah (Ric) Moos of Grand Prairie TX, and Barton (ReNae) Ashland of Cooperstown ND. Grandchildren Tom, Tim, and Scott Paul, David, Dan, Josh Moos, and Whitney and Courtney (Hoffman) Ashland. Great Grandchildren Ashley, Sheyenne, Cody, Jordan, Katie, Morgan, and Jacob Paul. Carter and Camdyn Moos, River and Charley Hoffman and Atlas Bones. Great Great Grandchildren Jaxx Paul and Olivia Moore.
Step Grandchildren Jayson, Jeff, and Jayme Gronneberg. Step Great Grandchildren Emmee, Hunter, Jaxson, Jersey, Kole, Xander, Knox, Stella and Grayden Gronneberg.
Brothers Clifford of Beach Bay CA and LeRoy (Janice) Ashland of Kenyon MN and sister in-law Myrtle Veile of Whitefish MT. Along with several nieces and nephews.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents Jens and Myrtle Ashland, his sister Donna Lou and her husband Maynard Walen, sister in-law Marjorie (Hazard) Ashland, brother in-laws Donald Veile and Everett Veile and his wife Narda Mae.
Because of the Covid 19 Virus, there will be a private family service, arrangements are being handled by Cooperstown Funeral Chapel.
