Astrid Burthold Obituary

Astrid Cecelia (Johnson) Burthold passed away peacefully on the morning of February 19, 2022 at the Nelson County Health System Care Center in the loving care of its’ staff and the staff and volunteers of Red River Valley Hospice.

Astrid was born March 14, 1926 to Louis and Pearl (Tharaldson) Johnson.  One of ten children she grew up in rural Pekin, just south of the Tolna Dam.  She attended the Lundeby School (Dayton Township #2) through eigth grade.  She then attended high school at Pekin, graduating in 1944 as Valedictorian.  On June 25, 1944, she married Miles H. Burthold at the Pekin parsonage.  They made their home and raised their family in Pekin until 1970 when they built a home on the former Broste farm southwest of Pekin.  Miles passed away in 1995 after over 50 years of marriage.  Astrid continued to live on the family farm until 2005 when she moved to Valley City.  In 2015 she moved into assisted living in McVille before moving into the care center in 2020.

Astrid had an entrepreneurial spirit, owning and operating the Pekin Café on two separate occasions in the 1950’s. Together she and Miles operated Stump Lake Park for several years in the mid to late 60’s.  She also sold Avon for many years.  She was known for her accounting skills, serving as clerk for the Pekin School Board, treasurer for Pekin WELCA, and bookkeeper for Miller’s Inn at Lakota before going to work at the Farmer’s and Merchants Bank in Tolna where she retired after 25 years of service.

Astrid was an avid reader, card player, and twins fan.  She was an excellent cook, famous for her butterscotch and sour cream raisin pies.  Her family was first and foremost in her life.  She never forgot a birthday or special occasion.  She was a life-long member of Pekin Lutheran church including WELCA and the Pekin American Legion Auxiliary.

Astrid is survived by her sons, Ron (Margo) of Pekin and Dennis of Fargo; grandchildren, Darci (Chris) Peters of Minot, Malia (John Gines) St. Andre of Rapid City SD, Pete (Rhonda) Burthold of Grand Forks, Annie Burthold of Fargo, Jesse Olson of Valley City, Eric Olson (Amanda Perks) of Forrest Park, OK, and Cash (Leanne) Burthold of Camilla GA; son-in-law, Dwight Olson of Litchville, ND; eleven great grandchildren; two great-great grandsons; and several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Miles; all nine siblings; daughter, Peggy Olson; son, Scott Burthold; grandson, Shane Burthold; and a great-granddaughter, Kaleah St. Andre.

Her children rise up and call her blessed - Proverbs 31:28a
