Arthur F. “Art” Howe, age 104, resident of McVille, ND, died Thursday, March 28, 2019 at the Nelson County Health System Care Center in McVille.
Art was born November 25, 1914 on his parent’s farm in Walsh County near Fordville, ND to Severt and Louise Howe. A lifelong resident of North Dakota, Art was baptized and confirmed in the Fordville Lutheran Church and attended the Eden District 41 county school. Art devoted most of his working years to growing crops and raising livestock on the Howe farm, interrupted only by World War II when Art was assigned to Special Forces as a mechanic in the Army (February 1942 to December 1945), serving in North Africa and Italy. He received three battle stars for campaigns in Rome-Arno, North Apennines, and Po Valley, and a Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Italy. Art married Mamie Kotaska of Conway, ND on November 18, 1946. The couple were blessed with two children, John and Iris. Art farmed until November 1978 when he and Mamie moved to McVille. Art was employed at the Sheyenne Valley Elevator in McVille for 10 years before retiring.
Art is survived by his brother, Hilmer of Milford, MI; his children, John (Joann) of Meridian, ID and Iris Collies (Brian) of Herndon, VA; grandchildren, Michael Howe of Omaha, NE, Christine Hawley (Dale) of Staunton, VA, and Bryan Oos (Maham) of Philadelphia, PA; great grandchildren, Andrew Howe of Omaha and Ayden Oos of Philadelphia; sister-in-law, Alice Kotaska; brother-in-law, Lee Wood; and many nieces and nephews.
Art is preceded in death by his wife, Mamie; his parents, Severt and Louise; brothers, Olaf, Sigvald, and John; and sisters, Thelma Larson, Hilda Kotaska, Viola Anderson, Tillie Skow, Lila Wood, and Esther Lein.
The Memorial Service will be Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at New Luther Valley Church, McVille, ND. Interment will be at a later date in the New Luther Valley Cemetery, rural McVille.
