Roger A. Nelson

Roger Alvin Nelson, age 71, of Cooperstown, ND died Monday, December 30, 2019 with family by his side in West Fargo, ND.

Roger was born May 22, 1948 the son of Alvin and Delores (Nierenberg) Nelson in Cooperstown, ND.  He grew up in rural Cooperstown where he later made his home on the family farm.  Roger married Sue Wagle on October 1, 1971 and remained married for 32 years.  He joined the ND Army National Guard in July of 1968 serving with the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion until his retirement in May of 2008. He was a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Roger worked for the City of Cooperstown as the Public Works Director for most of his career.  He served as a Griggs County Commissioner for years as well as owned and operated the Oasis Bar.  Roger was a member of the Gordon Lindgren Post #143, Trinity Lutheran Church and the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department.  Roger was an avid hunter and distinguished rifle shooter. 

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bob Nelson, and grandson Jordan.

Roger is survived by his daughters Kara (Jeff) Mitchell of Guthrie, OK and Lori (Greg) Vigesaa of West Fargo, ND; grandchildren Karissa, Kylee, Damian, Shailee and Jersey; his brother Gary (Sherry) Varberg; as well as his special friend and companion Kati Hoyt.

Memorial services will be Monday, January 6, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown, ND with visitation Sunday, January 5, 2020 from 5 to 7 with prayer service beginning at 7 at the Cooperstown Funeral Chapel.  Spring interment will be in the Fargo National Cemetery.
