Myron "Mike" Kjelgaard

Myron “Mike” Kjelgaard, age 90, died Saturday, July 27th, 2019 at Golden Acres Manor in Carrington, ND.

He leaves his wife, Virginia (Green) Kjelgaard after 69 years of marriage; his two daughters, Nancy Kjelgaard and Peggy Kjelgaard—and husband Roger Shepperd; his son, Bruce Kjelgaard—and wife Marcy (Tweed) Kjelgaard; five grandchildren (Tammie, Shawn, Amy, Michael, and Sara); fourteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Myron, the son of Harold Kjelgaard and Minnie (Olson) Kjelgaard, was born on August 12, 1928 and raised in the Cooperstown and Hannaford area.  In his early years, he helped his father and uncle farm. He attended Wahpeton State School of Science to learn mechanical and welding skills and later worked for hire to help other farmers in the area. Farming was in his blood.

He met Virginia Green and they were married June 4th, 1950.  They rented various farms in the Cooperstown, Hannaford and Sutton areas and in the Fall of 1961, they started a new life with their three children on their own farm near McHenry, ND.

In 1980, they started spending their winters in the South (Arizona and California) for health reasons.  They visited relatives, made new friends, and had many adventures.  Myron (Mike) loved sharing tales about his adventures and was known for his storytelling and jokes.  These stories will live on for a long time, bringing laughter and tears to many.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his half-brother, Richard (Dick) Kjelgaard; his step-mother, Myrtle (Knutson) Kjelgaard; and his step-siblings, Margaret, Evelyn, Clifford and Lola.  He leaves his half-brother, Harold (Butch) Kjelgaard—and wife Nancy (Foley) Kjelgaard and their two children: Erik (wife Andrea) and Chad (wife Teresa).

A celebration of life will be held Friday, August 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, McHenry, ND.  Visitation will be one hour prior to services in the church.  Interment will be in the Cooperstown Cemetery.  Arrangements with the Cooperstown Funeral Chapel.
