Maynard D. Hjelseth, age 80, resident of Lakota, ND, formerly of Michigan, ND, died Sunday, January 21, 2018 surrounded by his entire family at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Maynard Duane Hjelseth was born November 6, 1937 in Michigan, ND, the son of Nelvin and Rena (Smaaladen) Hjelseth. He was raised on his parent’s farm for a short time before the family moved into Michigan, where he attended and graduated from Michigan High School. Maynard married DeLores Fosse on November 5, 1961 at the Michigan Lutheran Church. The couple lived in the Michigan area, where they raised 2 wonderful sons, Kent & Kevin. Maynard worked in the crop spraying business until he operated the Standard Oil station in Michigan. He then purchased and operated the Ford garage until 1985. He then began farming north of Michigan while also working at Joe Lamb Oil & Supply Co. Maynard then worked at Don Solberg Camper Sales until his retirement. DeLores died April 10, 2008. Maynard enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and especially enjoyed attending their sporting events. He also loved working in his yard, playing card games, and going to the casino. He was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan and was proud of his Norwegian heritage.
Maynard will be missed by his 2 sons, Kent (Joni) Hjelseth of Akeley, MN and Kevin (fiancé, Dawn) Hjelseth of Warren, MN; 5 grandchildren, Gretta (Jacus) Van Horn, Bettsy, Mattie, Logan, and Lexi Hjelseth; 1 brother, Wayne (Karen) Hjelseth; 2 sisters, Lorraine Helling and Marjean Brossart; and many nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, DeLores; an infant sister; and 2 brothers, Harley & Norbert.
The funeral service will be held at the Michigan Lutheran Church, Michigan, ND, on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be in the spring at the Michigan Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service.
