Marie Dougherty Obituary

Marie I. Dougherty, age 101, of Lakota, ND, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in Lakota.

Marie Irene Allard was born July 7, 1917 at rural Warwick, ND, to Alfred and Lucille (Mannie) Allard.  Her family moved to rural Crary where she attended school, graduating from Crary High School with the class of 1936.  After high school, she worked at Mann’s Department Store and the Montgomery Ward store in Devils Lake.  Marie married R.W. “Bob” Dougherty on September 22, 1939 at the St. Mary rectory in Lakota.  They lived and farmed in Dodds Township for 18 years.  In March of 1962, Bob and Marie purchased the Lakota Hotel, Café and Bar.  They operated the business during the time the Minute Man Missiles were constructed in the area.  The couple sold the business in 1971 and built a new home in Lakota.  They continued to live there until 2009, when they moved into Prairie Rose Apartments.  Bob passed away May 4, 2012.  Marie served as clerk in the City Auditor’s Office for 14 years.  She was a member of the Home Benefit Homemakers Club and the Nemo Study Club.  She was a 4-H leader for many years and was recognized at the state level for her leadership.  A supporter of the Nelson County Fair, she served in many capacities, including chairmanship of the craft exhibits.  A life long member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Lakota, she was an active member of the Altar Society.  The couple enjoyed travels to both the east and west coasts, Alaska, Hawaii, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, France, and Holland.  While in Holland, they attended the annual Tulip Festival.  An accomplished seamstress, she also enjoyed crocheting and made many doilies, tablecloths, and doll clothes.  She took great pride in her home and decorated for all the seasons and for special days.  In 2004, Marie lost her sight to Macular Degeneration.  Although she had very limited vision, she enjoyed baking and was known for her delicious bread and pies.

Marie is survived by her son, John (Cheryl) Dougherty of Lakota; son-in-law, Raymond Capp of Larimore, ND; 7 grandchildren, Jeffrey (Anita) Capp, Kathy Woehl, Matthew (Cindi) Capp, Dr. Patrick (Carla) Capp, Dawn (Glenn) McLean, Kyle (Amy) Dougherty, and Chad (Kelly) Dougherty; 19 great grandchildren; 21 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Marie in death were her husband, Bob; daughter, Ann Marie Capp; 3 sisters, Gleva (Harry) Meranda, Eva (Carl) Meranda, and Louise (Alfred) Nelson; 4 brothers, Lester Allard, Lawrence (Doris) Allard, Wesley (Faye) Allard, and Edward (Harriet) Allard.

The Holy Rosary will be recited at St. Mary Catholic Church of Lakota on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will be in the Lakota Cemetery.
