Luella E. Olson

Luella E. Olson, age 92, resident of Lakota, ND, formerly of Brocket, ND, died Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society in Lakota.

Luella Eileen Swanson was born June 4, 1927 near Edmore, ND, the daughter of Ernest H. and Gertrude (Redmann) Swanson.  After the death of her mother and the separation of the family, Luella went into the foster home of Thorsten and Ruby Evenson at Brocket.  She attended school there and graduated from Brocket High School.  She then graduated from Mayville State Teachers College, earning a Standard Degree.  She taught school in Lawton and Brocket.  Later she did substitute teaching in Brocket and Lakota.  Luella married Kenneth R. Olson on August 7, 1949 at Vaage Lutheran Church of Brocket.  Two children were born of this marriage, Debra and Terrance.  They farmed in the Brocket area, where Luella was a helpmate to her husband on the farm.  She was a member of United Lutheran Church and United Lutheran WELCA.  She was also a member of the church choir and taught Sunday School for many years.  They retired from farming in 1984 and moved to Grand Forks.  While living there, Luella volunteered at St. Mark’s Church and Altru Hospital.  In 1990 they moved back to the farm.  Luella loved to read poetry psalms.  She often times would quote verses from poems and thought everyone should learn a poem.  She had many flower beds on the farm.

Luella will be deeply missed by her husband, Kenneth Olson of Lakota; 2 children, Debra (Clifford) Thompson of Mankato, MN and Terrance (Karen) Olson of Williston, ND; 5 grandchildren, Paul (Rachel) Thompson, Sarah (Byron) Clark, Laura (Brenden) Boe, Jacob Olson, and Kathryn Olson; 5 great grandchildren, Emma, Ella, Noah, Audrey, and Austin; 2 brothers, John Sanaker of Cambridge, MN and James Hall of St. Cloud, MN; and several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; foster parents; 6 brothers, Ernest, Charles, James, Richard, Jay, and Edwin; and 1 sister, Evelyn Froelich.

The Memorial Service will be held at United Lutheran Church of Brocket on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will be in the Hoff Cemetery, rural Brocket.  Visitation will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home of Lakota on Monday, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Lakota Ambulance or United Lutheran Church of Brocket.
