Fredrick L. Berdal

Fredrick L. Berdal, age 92, resident of Petersburg, ND, died Saturday, November 18, 2017 at his home in Petersburg.

Fredrick was born August 16, 1925 on the family farm in Dahlen Township of Nelson County to Lars and Carrie (Fredrickson) Berdal. He was baptized in the Zion Lutheran Church. He was an active and confirmed life-long member of the Dahlen Lutheran Church. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at Ft. Snelling, MN on March 13, 1946. He was honorably discharged at Ft. Lewis, WA on September 19, 1947. He returned home to farm with his father and later with his brother, Leonard. Fredrick was united in marriage to Marian Kovarik on October 21, 1953 at the Dahlen Lutheran Church. He was very active in the church, serving as President and Secretary, Sunday School President and also taught for many years. He served on the Nash Township Board, Nelson County ASCS Board, elevator board, Petersburg American Legion, FHA Board, and was a 4-H Leader for many years. He also held the Golden Head Cane, an honor bestowed upon the oldest living man in Petersburg.

Fredrick will be deeply missed by his wife, Marian, and their three children, John (Carolyn) Berdal of Petersburg, Lucy (Todd) Pierson of Leeds, ND, and Wayne (Kathy) Berdal of Petersburg; 8 grandchildren, Deanne (Steve) Nelson, Danielle Pierson, Angela (Damien) Rassier, Nathan (Mallory) Berdal, Dayna (John) Bartlette, Bryce Berdal & friend Mara Eggl, Nicole Berdal, and Austin Berdal; 9 great grandchildren, Bailey, Taylor, Reed, Quinn, and Axl Nelson, Halle, Blair, and baby Berdal, and Chay Rassier; a brother, Leonard (Marlys) Berdal of Grand Forks; sister-in-law, Valborg Berdal of Grand Forks; and many nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lars and Carrie; 3 brothers, Erick (Dorothy), Ingvald, and Carl; and 2 sisters, Corene and Frances.

The Funeral Service for Fredrick will be held at the Dahlen Lutheran Church, Dahlen, ND, on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be the Reverend Val Teppo. The organist will be Marlys Hoverson, the soloists will be Mary Ralston and Terry Ellingson. Interment will follow in the Zion Cemetery, rural Dahlen. The casketbearers will be Nathan Berdal, Bryce Berdal, Austin Berdal, Damien Rassier, Steve Nelson, and John Bartlette. The honorary casketbearers will be all of Fredrick’s granddaughters. Military Honors will be provided by the John Larson American Legion Post #247 of Petersburg, and the ND Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. and will continue on Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
