Daniel E. “Sonny” Shirek, age 84, died peacefully on Monday, September 30, 2019 at his farm near Michigan, ND, surrounded by his family.
Daniel was born May 24, 1935 to Gust and Pauline (Jicha) Shirek at St. Michael’s Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. He was raised on a farm near Whitman and attended the Whitman School. Daniel married Jean Bina on June 16, 1955. They built their life on the farm north of Michigan, where there was much action from the start. In 1969, SSR Pump Company was formed and was located on the farm. It was then that Daniel’s creativity and many friendships began. The company was located on the farm until it moved into Michigan in 1988. Daniel will most be remembered by his cigar that he never smoked, his accomplishments through SSR, his fishing excursions, his ability to visit with anyone that would lend an ear, his little smirk, his selective hearing, and that he loved to play Euchre.
Daniel will be deeply missed by his wife of 64 years, Jean; 2 sons, Kenneth Shirek and Paul Shirek, both of Michigan, ND; 2 daughters, Rebecca (Dennis) Anderson and Frances (David) Thompson, both of Lakota, ND; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Rose Anderson of Devils Lake, ND.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Pauline, exactly 75 years ago; his father, Gust; stepmother, Oney; 2 infant brothers, Gust and Kenneth; and a brother-in-law, Jerry Anderson.
The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church, Michigan, ND, on Friday, October 4, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Bechyne, rural Lankin, ND. Visitation will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home of Lakota, ND, on Thursday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Church on Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery or the Michigan Ambulance Service.
