Bryce Hoime Obituary

Bryce Wayne Hoime was born August 30, 1953 to Edwin and Bonny Lou (Kunkel) Hoime in Devils Lake, ND.  Bryce passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Edmore on Monday, September 17, 2018 at the age of 65.  He was under the care of Altru Hospice after battling melanoma for 3 years.

Bryce grew up on the family farm near Edmore with three sisters.  He attended Edmore School, graduating in 1971 in a class of 38 students, known to be the largest class.  After graduation he attended college at Lake Region in Devils Lake for 1 year and then transferred to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.  He was a proud member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity where he met many brothers who have remained lifelong friends.  Bryce graduated with a teaching degree in elementary and special education from UND in 1975.  He taught in Larimore, ND for 1½ years and always claimed to “have taught them everything he knew and that was enough.”

Bryce moved to Vancouver, WA for the winters and worked for a construction company, specializing in texturing ceilings and walls, always returning home to the family farm for the summers to help with the planting and harvesting, knowing his heart belonged to the farm.  He married Kristen Kalina on June 30, 1979 in Wadena, MN.  After 39 years of marriage, he recently exclaimed “the best decision I ever made in life was to marry that Kristy.”  They wintered in WA together for the next 2 years until 1982 when they returned to Edmore, ND.

Bryce loved playing fastpitch softball and was a proud member of the “Southam Jays” for almost 20 years.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time at the lake with family and friends.  He was an avid sports fan and thoroughly enjoyed the MN Twins, Vikings, and all UND sports.  His love of music was expressed through singing with the High Plains Trio for the past 12 years.  Bryce was passionate about the Edmore community.  He enjoyed serving on various boards including: CHS Elevator, Concordia Lutheran Church, Edmore Cemetery, and Fancher Township.

He will be deeply missed by his loving and devoted wife, Kristy; his 2 children, Brandon, Devils Lake, ND and Katerina, Edmore, ND; his granddaughter, Ava Marie, Devils Lake, ND; 3 sisters, Dixie (Larry) McGillis, Portland, ND, Vicki (Don) Logan, Devils Lake, ND, and Lori (Kerwin) Pankratz, Devils Lake, ND; one uncle, Dr. Richard Kunkel, Devils Lake, ND; Laurence Dykhoff’s children; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of amazing friends and neighbors.

Bryce was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Reinhard and Recca (Klick) Kunkel & Thomas and Christina (Lahd) Hoime; stepfather, Laurence Dykhoff.

The Funeral Service will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church of Edmore, ND, on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will be in the Edmore Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the church on Friday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
