Melvin B. Flaagan, age 97, resident of Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Tolna, ND, died Sunday, March 9, 2008 at 4000 Valley Square Woodside Village in Grand Forks.

Melvin Bernhard Flaagan was born April 3, 1910 in Dayton Township of Nelson County, ND, the son of Ole and Carrie (Halvorson) Flaagan. He was baptized and confirmed at Sigdal Lutheran Church, and attended Forde Township School. He then farmed with his parents and worked for the Alfred Newhouse farm. Melvin married Dorothy M. Burke on September 19, 1937. They purchased their home farm along the Sheyenne River in 1938. They farmed in Dayton Township all of their life together. They spent some winters in Tolna before moving into McVille, ND, in 1978. Dorothy died September 8, 1986 . Melvin lived in Tolna from 1987 until 1999, when he moved to Tufte Manor in Grand Forks. In 2005 he moved to 4000 Valley Square Woodside Village. He was a past member of the Elks Club in Devils Lake, ND.

Melvin will be greatly missed by his 3 sons, Donovan (Joy) Flaagan of Grand Forks, ND, Bradley (Diane) Flaagan of Chaska, MN, and Myron (Alice) Flaagan of Fargo, ND; 4 grandchildren and their families, Cindy (Craig) Campbell and their children Ian & Bergen of Smithfield, VA, Stephanie (Michael) Korb and their children Arianna & Jonathan of Fon Du Lac, WI, Shane Flaagan of Waconia, MN, and Shelly Flaagan and her son Tevin of Fargo, ND; his brother, Leonard (Daisy) Flaagan of Tolna, ND; and several nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; 2 brothers, Gerhard & Odien; and 2 sisters, Lorraine Erlandson & Ida Flaagan.

Melvin's Funeral Service will be held at Sigdal Lutheran Church, rural Tolna, ND, on Friday, March 14, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. Officiating will be the Reverend David Nichols. The organist will be Phyllis Haugland and the soloist will be Bud Loe. Visitation will be held at the church from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in the spring at the Sigdal Church Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Jerome Flaagan, Odell Flaagan, Shane Bradley Flaagan, Jerry Forde, Dale Flaagan, and Corey Halvorson.
