Marian
T. Flohr, age 91, resident of Tolna, ND, died Friday,
October 29, 2010 at Rosewood on Broadway in Fargo, ND.
Marian
Thelma Thorson was born Sept. 23, 1919, the daughter
of Ted and Mary (Danielson) Thorson. At that time, her
parents were living on the farm of her grandparents,
Sam and Betsy Thorson, in Forde Township, Nelson County.
When Marian was in 3rd grade the family moved to Devils
Lake, ND. When she was a junior in high school the family
moved back to the family farm and Marian graduated from
Tolna High School in 1937. Her future husband, Ray Flohr,
was in the same graduating class. After high school
Marian attended Mayville State Teachers College. Her
first teaching job was in a one room country school
in Forde Township. After one year she moved to a teaching
job in Fordville, ND. During World War II she moved
to California and worked at a naval shipyard near San
Francisco. Marian and Ray Flohr were married in 1944.
Ray had been working in the bank in Tolna when he was
drafted into the army in 1942. They were married when
he came home on furlough. When Ray was shipped to Europe
Marian returned to Devils Lake and worked in a flower
shop. After the war ended they settled in Tolna, and
Ray resumed work in the bank. They lived in the same
house in Tolna all their married life; adding on to
the house in the 1950s. Ray passed away in 1987, and
Marian continued to live in Tolna until, in 2010 at
the age of 91, she moved to Rosewood nursing home in
Fargo. Marian taught 1st and 2nd grade in Tolna for
a number of years. In the early 1970s she organized
and taught the first kindergarten in the Tolna School.
Many people in the Tolna area are her former students.
Marian was a member of the Tolna American Lutheran Church
and she was a charter member of the Tolna American Legion
Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, cross word puzzles,
family visits, her home, and yard.
Marian
was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one
brother (Stanley), and four sisters (Bernice, Florence
, Ione, and Mavis). She is survived by her 3 children;
