Paul Hagen
was born September 24, 1927 to Henry & Clara (Olson)
Hagen on their farm south of Glenwood, MN. He attended
country school in the grades and later at Glenwood High
School. He was in the Navy for 18 months and then came
home to work on the farm. He attended Lutheran Bible
Institute of Minneapolis, MN, two winter quarters where
he met and later married Marilyn Hanson on November
2, 1952.
Paul
was a member of Barsness Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran
Church and served as a deacon at Trinity, was on the
board of Red Willow Bible Camp, a member of Lutheran
Lay Renewal, Gideon's, Hannaford Bowling League and
Sheyenne Valley Horseshoe.
Paul
& Marilyn made their home on the family farm until
Paul changed profession. He first worked for National
Farmers Organization and later sold insurance in Cooperstown,
ND and surrounding areas in North Dakota. Paul &
Marilyn moved their family to Cooperstown in September,
1966, where their 5 children attended school.
Paul
taught Sunday School for many years, first in Glenwood
and later in Cooperstown. While he was attending Barsness
Lutheran at Glenwood they built an addition of Sunday
School rooms. Paul was on the committee and very involved
in the actual building. He helped start a church softball
league in the Glenwood area.
When
he was in Cooperstown he helped start a Junior Bowling
League. Later his interests turned to horseshoe where
he helped build the courts and start an adult and junior
league. The Sheyenne Valley Junior League was the second
largest National Junior Horseshoe League. He participated
in many world horseshoe tournaments, taking many youth
with him. In 2006 he and Marilyn were inducted into
the North Dakota Horseshoe Hall of Fame. He also got
many of his Grandchildren interested in the sport and
went to World tournaments together.
He
is survived by his wife of 57 years and 4 children,
Vicki Hagen & (Mike Mruz) of Omaha, NE; Judy &
(Greg) Curtis of Arvada, CO; Jerald & (Eileen) Hagen
of Glenwood, MN; Kathy & (Lee) McReynolds of Coon
Rapids, MN; Son in law Gary Snead of Sauk Rapids, MN;
18 Grandchildren, Micah, Sarah, Joshua & Rebekah
Snead; Heather Kasel & Travis Yoakum; Gretchen Gordon,
Heidi, Anna & Maria Curtis; Christina Monilaws,
Alexandra Holle, Stephanie, Cassandra & Mackenzie
Hagen; Katrina, Allison & Breanna McReynolds; 3
Great Grandchildren Christian & Addison Kasel; Brynley
Hagen; and 5 step grandchildren and one sister Alta
Petterson of Richland, WA. He was preceded in death
by his parents and daughter Pam Snead.
In
Lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to go to
“Youth with a Mission ” or Red Willow Bible Camp for
the future boys bath house.
Funeral
services for Paul will be held Sunday, July 11, 2010
at 2:00 PM in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cooperstown.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services in the
church. Officiating will be Reverend Jessica Merchant.
Casketbearers will be Paul's grandchildren. Organist
will be Kathy Soma-Gawronski. Soloist will be
George Vigesaa. A second service for Paul will
be held Monday, July 12, 2010 at 2:00 PM in the Barsness
Lutheran Church in Glenwood, MN. Visitation will be
one hour prior to services in the church. Interment
will be in the Barsness Cemetery.
