Julia Quam,
age 91, of Lakota, died Friday, September 9, 2011 at
the Good Samaritan Society, Lakota, ND.
Julia
Almeda Johnson Quam was born August 30, 1920 to Alma
and Joseph Johnson in Cleveland Township, Walsh County,
ND, and graduated from Dahlen High School in 1939. On
October 26, 1940 she married Jacob “Jack” Quam, and
they farmed near Dahlen for more than 35 years while
raising their four children. In 1970 they moved to Dahlen
from the farm home where their daughter Joyce now lives
with her family. Julia's husband died in 1978 and she
became a resident of Lakota in 2002. Throughout her
life in the Dahlen area, Julia was an integral part
of the community. She worked at the Dahlen Mercantile
and was the site manager for Senior Meals. She was active
in many activities as a charter member of the Harmony
Homemakers, a Dahlen Daughters 4-H club leader for 11
years, a singer in the church choir, a Sunday School
teacher, a member of the Sons of Norway with her husband
Jack, a treasurer for the Zion Cemetery, and a Stewardship
Chair for the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
of America (WELCA) for many years as the Dahlen Lutheran
Church women made quilts to send overseas. She enjoyed
sewing, gardening, baking, teaching crafts to senior
citizens, square dancing with her husband, and attending
school activities with her children and grandchildren.
She cherished her family and enjoyed making them lefsa
and other Norwegian specialties for the holidays and
creating them special wedding, college, or baby quilts
to celebrate important moments in their lives.
She
will be missed and remembered by her four children,
Jan (Barry) Anderson, WI, Donald (Phyllis) Quam, WY,
Helen (William) Sherman, VA, and Joyce (Mark) Landeis,
Dahlen, ND; 13 grandchildren, Lisa (Craig) Campbell,
Tory (Vernon) Brockdorf, Jade (Ben) Hsiang, Patti Quam
Kelley, Delbert (Sue) McOmie, Alan (Lisa) McOmie, Kathy
(Rod) Bang, Pam (Ron) Kosmicki, Craig (Beckie) McOmie,
Christina Sherman, Nicholas Sherman, Jason (Cagney)
Landeis, and Kevin Landeis; 21 great-grandchildren;
15 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Mildred Kelley;
sister-in-law, Aggie Johnson.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister,
Margaret; and brother, Omer.
Julia's
Funeral Service will be held at the Dahlen Lutheran
Church, Dahlen, ND, on Saturday, September 17, 2011
at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Gary Knabe officiating. Dee
Ann Ellingson is the organist and Terry Ellingson providing
special music as the soloist. Interment will follow
at the Zion Cemetery near Dahlen. The casketbearers
will be Nicholas Sherman, Jason Landeis, Kevin Landeis,
Vern Brockdorf, Ben Hsiang, David Kelley, Arlan Johnson,
and Gary Johnson. The honorary bears will be Fred Berdal,
Leonard Berdal, Orpha Ellingson, Betty Jean Ellingson,
Floyd Fredrickson, John Steinley, June Ellingson, Lorna
Jenson, and Oscar Steinley. Visitation will be held
at the church on Friday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with
a family service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue
on Saturday, beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the time of
service.
The
family of Julia Quam would like to express their sincere
appreciation for the compassionate care provided to
her by the staff of the Good Samaritan Society Lakota.
In
lieu of flowers, the family suggests any memorials be
designated for the Dahlen Lutheran Church, the Zion
Cemetery, or the Good Samaritan Society Lakota.
