Floyd
J. Herda, age 83, resident of Devils Lake, ND, died Sunday,
September 16, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake.
Floyd
Joseph Herda was born February 2, 1924 at Brocket, ND, the
son of John and Albina (Bina) Herda. He was raised on his
parents farm and attended the Hope School and the Southam
School. Floyd was drafted into the U.S. Army on May 7, 1943
and was honorably discharged as a Corporal on November 9,
1945. He returned home and married Betty Kurtz on June 8,
1948 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devils Lake. They
lived there all of their life. Floyd began hauling mail
to the Post Office, then as a postal mail carrier in town
until he became a rural mail carrier. He retired from the
postal service in 1984. In his retirement years Floyd enjoyed
painting. He was a member of the Knight's of Columbus, the
Elks, the Eagles, the VFW and American Legion.
Floyd
will be deeply missed by his wife, Betty Herda of Devils
Lake; a son, Don Herda of Devils Lake; a daughter-in-law,
Barbara Herda of Lakota, ND; a son-in-law, Ian McCaughey
of Regina, Saskatchewan; 5 grandchildren, Keith, Andrew,
and Colleen McCaughey, Matthew (Angie) Herda, and Heather
(Brent) Leith; 3 great-grandchildren, Alexis Herda, Macy
Herda, and Rylie Leith; a brother, Joe (Arlene) Herda of
Iowa; 2 sisters, Albina Evenson of Minneapolis, MN, and
Margaret Evenson of Park River, ND; and many nieces and
nephews.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Frank
Miller; son, Thomas Herda; daughter, Theresa McCaughey;
2 brothers, Frank and John; and sister, Florence Peterson.
The
Funeral Mass for Floyd J. Herda will be held at the Church
of St. Joseph, Devils Lake, ND, on Thursday, September 20,
2007 at 10:00 a.m. The Celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Dale Kinzler.
The cantor will be Lynne Webster, and the organist will
be JoDee Lagein. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic
Cemetery, Devils Lake. Casketbearers will be Keith McCaughey,
Andrew McCaughey, Matthew Herda, Brent Leith, Dean Klier,
and Jim Herda. Military Honors will be provided by the Neathery-Simensen
Post #756 Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Lake
Region Color Guard. Visitation will be held at the Church
on Wednesday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Vigil
Service and 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Church
on Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
