Edgar R. Tangen, age 94, resident of McVille, ND, formerly of Pekin, ND, died Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the Nelson County Health System Care Center in McVille, ND.

Edgar Russel Tangen was born May 11, 1915 on his parents farm near Pekin, the son of Simon and Anna (Brekken) Tangen. Edgar was the youngest of 10 children. He was baptized and confirmed at the Sheyenne Lutheran Church, rural Pekin. In May of 1933 Edgar graduated with honors from Pekin High School. He continued his education at Fargo Agricultural College for 1 year. He then returned to rural Pekin to farm with his brother, Sidney Tangen. Edgar married Iris Brudeseth on September 28, 1940 in Grand Forks, ND. The couple made their home at rural Pekin where they farmed and worked together for 65 years. They took great pride in their farm. Iris passed away February 11, 2006 with Edgar by her side. Edgar then moved into the Nelson County Care Center. He still drove out to the farm once a week to check on the crops. The last years Edgar gave up driving but still enjoyed being taken for a ride around the area. Edgar was very involved with the church and served on the Sheyenne Church Board. He also served on the Nelson County Social Service Board and the McVille School Board. Edgar was very interested in the government and attended many legislative sessions in Bismarck. He took great pride in having a model T and model A fully restored and having them in many area parades.

Edgar is survived by 1 sister, Elaine Jeglum of Fargo, and a large, loving, extended family of nieces, nephews, great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephew.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; 4 brothers, Peter, Christ, Melvin, and Sidney; and 4 sisters, Mabel, Rosella, Josie, and May.

Edgar's Funeral Service will be held at the Sheyenne Lutheran Church, rural Pekin, on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be the Reverend David Nichols. The organist will be Betty Bina and the soloist will be Paul Odden. Interment will be in the Sheyenne Church Cemetery. The casketbearers will be Kent Ensrud, Mike Tangen, Craig Flaagan, Jeffrey Luehring, Brian Luehring, Terry Luehring, and Robert Ensrud. Honorary bearers will include the staff & residents of the Nelson County Health System Care Center. Visitation will be held at the Stanley-Iverson Funeral Home of McVille on Monday, May 25, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will continue at the church on Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
